Richard Gere Divorce from Carey Lowell A Test If He Has Practiced Buddhism Enough

Oct 24, 2014 10:33 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

The Richard Gere divorce from Carey Lowell that began its first court hearing on October 23 is worth observing, not for the reasons why they are separating, but more on whether the Pretty Woman leading man has truly lived up the character and virtues of a real Buddhist convert. After all, he has become the un-official proselytizer of Buddhism in the West.

Sixty-three-year-old Gere has been embracing Dharma and Buddhism teachings for 40 years. In one of his public speaking engagements in India, he said, "When I was a young man in my twenties, I was a confused man, and I tried to figure out why I was confused. I had left college when I was 19 to become an actor and I was very anxious to get started with my life and I was quite lucky to get started early." This confusion and void led him to Buddhism and Tibet.

He was so mesmerized to have had the chance to speak to the Dalai Lama and stayed for a week in Tibet lodging in its monasteries. He was so proud and happy to be a Buddhist as replacement to Christianity, that it resulted to the forming of The Gere Foundation, which supports humanitarian efforts conducted in Tibet.

But the religion has yet to work in his love life or married life. The Richard Gere divorce from Carey Lowell, a James Blonde leading lady, is his second. His first marriage was with Cindy Crawford. Among the reasons cited for their separation was the extreme difference in lifestyle where Gere preferred to be at the privacy of his home while Lowell socialized a lot. They have a 14-year old son. The effect of the divorce to Gere's $100M fortune is suspected as the cause of his "wielding the pointy black umbrella like a sword" to one of the photographers, according to Julia Marsh's report in pagesix.com.

The question is, hasn't he found yet the bliss in marriage or the virtues of the religion in his marriage? While separation or divorce is not prohibited in Buddhism, according to budsas.org, the decision "would scarcely arise if the Buddha's injunctions were strictly followed."

It was also reported that since Richard Gere's separation with Carey Lowell last year, he dated and lived with another girl. Maybe this part of his life cannot be treated by any religion.
