Croatian Boxer Who Punched A Referee Gets Lifetime Ban From Boxing After 'Emergency Session' Between Country's Game Officials

Oct 26, 2014 05:16 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Remember the Croatian boxer who punched a referee after the latter stopped his match with another boxer against his favor? He will not punch a referee anymore. More so, he will never be able to step on a boxing ring again in his entire life. Croatian Vido Loncar, 18, went after Polish referee Mageja Dziurgota after he was declared the loser in a match against Lithuanian Algirdas Baniulis at the European Youth Boxing Championships held in his hometown. Loncar just kept on receiving punches and the referee opted to breakout the fight because to prevent the Croatian fighter from getting serious injuries.

Because of his actions, Loncar has been banned for life by the Croatian Boxing Federation after an emergency sessions between members of the executive board.

''The executive board of the Croatian Boxing Federation met in an emergency session and reached a decision on the suspension and lifelong exile from boxing of boxer Vido Loncar," the federation said in a statement.

The organization also apologized to the world's governing bodies of the sport and to the family of the referee.

'We apologize to the world boxing organisation - AIBA - and the European boxing organisation - EUBC, to the International Olympic Committee, the Croatian Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Education and the Office of Education and Sport in the city of Zagreb for the brutal attack on an official by the Croatian national team representative and the damage to boxing that is caused by the act.'

The video of the Croatian boxer punching a referee has become viral in just few hours. Even major sports websites like Bleacher Report, Complex, and SB Nation shared the video with Loncar garnering mostly negative comments from the public.

Right after the incident, Loncar was immediately lambasted by the people, both those who watch the match live and the ones who saw the footage in Youtube. He was called many words. However, he also got defenders in his coaches who said that "he is not a butcher or as bad as this act makes him look," said Zeljko Mavrovic at the time. "This was part of his excessive ambition in that moment."

Sadly, he no longer has the chance to pursue that dream.
