Feminism According To Emma Watson And Taylor Swift; American Singer -Songwriter Looks Up To The British Colonia Star As A Feminist Icon?

Oct 31, 2014 12:09 AM EDT | By Felicity Maris Modesto

Emma Watson and Taylor Swift have exactly the same idea about what feminism really means: Men and women are entitled to equal rights and opportunities. But the famous singer-songwriter exclaimed that she wishes she had someone like the "Colonia" lead star to look up to when she was an adolescent. This way she would have better understood it early on.

And with that, as shared by the Huffington Post in their account of Swift's interview on "Tout Le Monde En Parle, " a French-Canadian talk show, she would have claimed herself to be a feminist at a young age because she fully understood what it was all about.

Emma Watson and Taylor Swift may not have had the chance to air their views on the subject at the same time on UN, but they do agree that not too many girls are aware of its true meaning, let alone implication in their lives.

Vanity Fair reported that United Nations has awarded Watson the honorable title of U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador. Her activities following her designation has been evident online - crashing the U.N.  web site, public denunciation of a sexist Turkish politician via Twitter posts and uninhibitedly sharing her thoughts on gender issues surrounding the recent celebrity photo leak scandal.

But what made her stand out was her inflamed views on feminism that she expressed in her speech for the launching of the "HeforShe" campaign. In speaking at the U.N. Headquarters located in New York City, her main objective was not only to awaken men and boys to the hurtful truth about gender inequality prevailing in today's society. But she also aimed to encourage them into taking concrete actions to end it once and for all.

It was this exact speech, which Swift had the privilege of watching now that she is a full grown woman, that she wished she had seen back when she was 12 years old. During the talk show interview, she opined that many girls claim they are not feminists because they associate it with protests and angry public outbursts.

And in her case, she had thought back then that feminism was about hating men. She credited Lena Dunham on making her understand what it really meant, which coincided with what Watson had passionately stated in her speech.

Thus, even if Emma Watson and Taylor Swift had not gotten acquainted early on in their lives, the latter said that she admired the former for taking the stand - and with that, she is glad it occurred at a time when she could witness it.
