Moscow McDonald’s Reopens Following Hygiene Controversy

Nov 19, 2014 05:56 PM EST | By Michael Smith

The first McDonald's restaurant to open in Moscow has reopened following three months of closure-its administration was accused of unfavorable hygiene practices.

"When it was closed I was a bit upset to be honest," Sergei, a Moscow resident, told Fortune magazine.

"I had to go to work with an empty bag as I could not get anything in the morning."

The Pushkin Square-based McDonald's location was shut down amidst tensions between Russia and the United States over political events occurring in Ukraine. Although the temporary shutdown was not related to the standoff, it certainly added stress to the situation.

McDonald's has a total of 461 restaurants in Russia, with 25 new locations opening by the end of this year, Fortune also reports.

Two other McDonald's locations in Moscow were also shut down earlier this year, but they are expected to reopen as well.

"We have obtained agreement from the Russian public health agency to reopen our Pushkin Square restaurant," McDonald's spokeswoman Svetlana Polyakova said in her announcement, according to RT
