Uber Subject To Criticism Following Australia Price Hike

Dec 15, 2014 10:26 PM EST | By Michael Smith

International rideshare and taxi company Uber has been criticized for raising prices in Australia while customers were trying to flee an area of Sydney following an armed hostage situation.

Jihadist gunmen entered a chocolate shop in downtown Sydney and took control of the business for over twelve hours.

Throughout the detente, Uber surged its prices: $100 minimum fare and $4/minute were set as prices.

"We are all concerned with events in CBD," Uber Sydney posted on Twitter.

"Fares have increased to encourage more drivers to come online & pick up passengers in the area."

Following Uber Sydney's announcement, a number of Twitter users criticized the company for its "opportunism."

The company has also been criticized for its practices in other countries regarding the monopolization of taxi industries and wages of drivers.

Earlier this week, the government of France announced it would ban Uber's inexpensive UberPop due to drivers not having professional licenses, NPR reports.
