Only nine months ago, Instagram had 200 millions of user. Nine months later, the social media app claims to have about 300 million of people using the photo and video sharing website.

Instagram now officially bigger than Twitter, which had 284 million active users as of six weeks ago. They are claiming that their site has the ability to change the world. The company's CEO Kevin Systrom described the milestone to Newsbeat technology reporter as "exciting" and said the company would "continue to grow".

Facebook is in the top of the list of social networking website by the number of users as they have 1.35 billion monthly active users.

Kevin Systrom said that the service was also going to begin verifying the Instagram accounts. Verified accounts will be identified with a mark so that users can know that they are really what they say they are. Instagram is also cracking down on spam accounts, deleting them from the service instead of just deactivating them.

This site has recently started displaying ads. However, many people are not happy to see this advertisements in Instagram. "The reason why we're doing this is as a growth engine for Instagram." Kevin Systrom says about this, "When you get to 300m users it's not cheap to run that service and you need to make sure to be able to hire more people."

"We're seeing a lot of people coming in the fashion world, a lot of people coming in, in the youthful teen's world, and a lot of people internationally as well," CEO Kevin Systrom said in an exclusive interview with CNBC.

Can Instagram keep up that pace of growth? "That's the big challenge for me and my team going forward," he said. More than 70 percent of Instagram's users are outside the United States, the company said. Instagram was set up by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in October 2010. Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.
