It was just last week when a gunman burst inside a café in Sydney, Australia where he took 18 people as hostages; two of them died along with the gunman. As the whole country is recuperating from the tragedy that has happened, another unfortunate incident is making headlines – the murder of 8 children.

Mersane Warria, a 37-year old mother will be charged for the murder of what police believed to be her seven children and her niece. "She is awake and lucid and able to speak," Queensland Police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said. "At this stage we're not looking for anybody else - we're comfortable that the community at large is safe," he added.

According to reports, police were called to the home in the Cairns suburb of Manoora Friday after receiving a report of a woman with serious injuries. When the police entered the scene, they found 8 bodies ranging from 18 months to 15 years old. One of the older brothers was the one who discovered the scene first.

Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said that it was utterly a painful situation and that the police who responded to the call were ‘distressed’

"These events are extremely distressing for everyone, of course, and police officers aren’t immune to that, we’re human beings as well," Asnicar said. "But the police we have here are very highly trained and professional. I’m very happy with the response,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the Queensland premier, Campbell Newman, said he was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic events in Cairns today, “Indeed, the whole Cairns community and the people of Queensland will feel the effects of this tragedy, particularly at a time of year when families come together.” He said, “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those concerned.”

Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott also said in a statement, "The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking, all parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country."
