Cheap-Flight Site ‘SkipLagged’ Remains In Operation Despite Law Suit

Dec 31, 2014 01:43 PM EST | By Michael Smith

Aktarer Zaman, the 22-year-old founder of SkipLagged.com, is still running his cheap-flight internet business, despite receiving a lawsuit last month from United Airlines and Orbitz.

The two abovementioned companies claim that his site promotes "unfair competition" since it uses a "hidden city" tactic, allowing customers to book a ticket with a layover in their actual destination while skipping subsequent flights.

"All it does is provide information to consumers that is already publicly accessible," Zaman told CNBC on Wednesday.

He later remarked ""travelers do not break the law when they miss all of their flights so why would it be illegal to miss one leg of a flight?"

The plaintiff companies are suing the 22-year-old entrepreneur for six claims of $75,000 each-if charged, he may have to pay approximately $500,000.

Despite antagonisms to his website, Zaman has continued to run his business and even mentioned during his interview with CNBC that he has been overwhelmed with increasing website traffic following news of the law suit. He has also raised over $30,000 on GoFundMe to deter some of the costs of legal fees.

Analysts have suggested that Zaman's "Hidden City" strategy is nothing new and that it has been known for decades.
