Eddie Murphy Dead? Latest Celebrity Death Hoax Victim

Sep 01, 2012 09:06 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Eddie Murphy dead? Bill Cosby Dead? For the past two weeks, many celebrities including Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Rihanna and even Bill Nye the Science Guy have been targets for false celebrity death rumors.

In yet another elaborate celebrity death hoax - which fellow celebrities Cher, Jon Bon Jovi and Lindsay Lohan have all fallen victim to, now comedian Bill Cosby and Bill Nye the Science guy have to. Good news, both Bill's are alive and well.

Rumors began swirling that the funny man had died when an "R.I.P. Bill Cosby" Facebook page popped up, sending Twitter into a frenzy. It's not the first inaccurate report of his demise. In 2010, the veteran comedian mentioned to CNN it was his fourth time being reported [dead]."

Grammy-award winning singer Rihanna was reported to have had a heart attack on Monday.A photoshopped fake article, made to look like it was from a French news site, alleged the singer "sunk into an [alcohol-induced] coma before succumbing to a heart attack."

The phony "news" story spread rapidly on social media Monday night, leading many to believe Rihanna had died.

And Eddie Murphy's latest death last Tuesday was said to have been the result of a snowboarding accident. As Gossip Cop notes, the actor has been "killed" about a dozen times in recent years. But he, too, is alive and well.

A nasty rumor began making its rounds on Facebook and Twitter that the comedian had died. It quickly became a trend, but that was largely due to the fact that interested fans started searching for that online to find out whether it was true or not.

"Why do they keep killing Bill Cosby? He's dead 4x per year! LOL," wrote @YellowCougar

"I don't understand why people fake kill celebrities. Why?? Bill Cosby is NOT dead," wrote @TLoveSpeakss.

Another Twitter user, @TizahBaby was annoyed with the fake "Bill Cosby dead" rumors and took to Twitter to express just that. "Bill Cosby NOT DEAD so STOP postin R.I.P Bill Cosby stop tryna jinks him.u dummies !"

"Bill Cosby Death" is apparently not a new online trend. Back in 2010, the long-time comedian was pronounced dead on Twitter and Facebook of a number of times.

Bill Cosby even called in to "Larry King Live" to chat about his death -- the death that happened only in the context of an Internet hoax propagated on Twitter.

The 75-year old comedian said that "I don't want to do this anymore, because this is my fourth time being reported [dead]".

"Emotional friends have called about this misinformation," he said on his own Twitter account. "To the people behind the foolishness, I'm not sure you see how upsetting this is."

Meanwhile, another Bill has fallen victim. Bill Nye the Science Guy is also doing just fine and these reports on social media are nothing but rumors.
