Urban Outfitters' Same-Store Sales And Revenue Rise Despite Public Relations Mishaps

Mar 12, 2015 12:39 AM EDT | By Michael Smith

Same-store sales for retailer Urban Outfitters both increased in 2014, despite encountering unfavorable responses to several of the company's products.

Some of these products include a blood-stained Kent State University sweater, a drunk Jesus t-shirt and a outfit resembling a Nazi uniform.

Although stocks fell in 2013 and 2014, same-store sales rose four percent in the fourth quarter while current shares boosted by 11.5 percent on earlier this week, CNN reports.

"I don't think this is a good place for us to be," Hayne said last year during an interview discussing the decline in sales.

"We have always said that we want to be college and post- college in terms of the customer base that we try to serve."

Although the company's revenue has increased, its overall profits have decreased. Urban Outfitters reported a $1.01 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2014 while experiencing a four-percent increase in sales.

The retailer has recently been undergoing changes in branding and marketing aimed at connecting with a more diverse age market. Originally, the company focused on younger customers between the ages of 14 and 17. However, Urban Outfitters is currently in the process of rebranding its products for an older consumer market.

"We are pleased to report our first billion dollar quarter, fueled by positive retail segment 'comps' at all of our brands...it is encouraging to see this sales trend continue into Q1," Chief Executive Officer Richard A. Hayne said, according to Seeking Alpha
