Morgan Freeman Died 2012: Actor Joins Bill Cosby, Alfonso Ribeiro in Celebrity Death Hoax

Sep 09, 2012 01:40 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Morgan Freeman died on Saturday? Earlier this week, a report surfaced online stating that actor Morgan Freeman died, but more reputable media websites quickly refuted these false claims. As of Saturday, September 8, 2012 though, his representative confirmed to the world that Freeman is indeed alive and well.

The latest celebrity death hoax began like the one surrounding comedian and actor Bill Cosby last month. A Facebook page was created for Freeman regarding his death. In just a matter of hours, the page was gaining popularity and till now, it has garnered over 60,000 "likes."

As a result of these "Morgan Freeman dead" rumors going around, one of his representatives told E! Online: "Morgan is alive and well, and joins the long list of actors who have been victimized by this hoax."

Many have taken to Twitter to either joke about the matter or denounce the spread of theses rumors. Some have joked about the incident, saying that Freeman was God - a reference to his part in "Bruce Almighty" and "Evan Almighty" where he played the character of God.

In just the same week, another actor, Alfonso Ribeiro who famously starred as Carlton in the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," also was targeted. Another Facebook page was set up which sent out condolences to Alfonso Ribeiro's family following his death. It turns out that Ribeiro is just perfectly fine and was actually spotted out and about after the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.

"I guess FB has a page saying I died. I wonder what people are gonna say at my funeral???," Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted.

Celebrity death hoaxes have become increasingly popular over recent months, and numerous websites have attempted to "kill off" famous celebrities in the hopes of gaining attention to their claims.

Last week Eddie Murphy was reported as dead by Global Associated News - a website which has now become notorious for faking death claims of the rich and famous.

According to the GAN: "The actor & novice snowboarder was vacationing at the Zermatt ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland with family and friends. Witnesses indicate that Eddie Murphy lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed."
