Amazon's New Home Services Marketplace Includes Painting, Plumbing And Electrical Work

Mar 30, 2015 09:34 AM EDT | By Michael Smith

Amazon launched its Home Services marketplace program on Monday, which allows customers to hire experts for painting, plumbing and electrical work, among other domestic tasks.

The new program will function as an intermediary between third-party companies online customers. It will also thrust the company further into the online services field, which many say is a growing industry.

"Third party estimates show that customers spend four times more on services each year than they do on physical products," Amazon official Peter Faricy told Reuters

"So for us the opportunity is very big."

Amazon Home Services will charge customers a five percent transaction fee as well as platform fees for its utilization. In exchange, the company will offer home services provided by a broad selection of companies undergoing a background check.

Amazon is also offering to match the cost of specific services if customers are able to find lower prices on alternative sites.

"We really make something transparent for customers which is difficult today," Faricy said, according to The Verge

"We have standardized and prepackaged all of our service offerings. So you know exactly what is going to be done and how much it's going to cost you, up front, no surprises."

The company was founded in 1994 in Seattle.
