Gwyneth Paltrow ‘Is Doing Her Poor People Shopping Wrong’ For #FoodBankNYCChallenge

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is known for being somewhat adventurous with food, going off of her website Goop and her cookbooks.

The mother-of-two has been garnering criticism for her recent tweet, which showed a picture of what she bought with $29 for the #FoodBankNYCChallenge.

Paltrow is attempting to live on $29 for a week as part of a campaign to raise awareness of how the poorest Americans live, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Regardless of the positive meaning behind the recent challenge, Paltrow’s shopping bag has been criticized as unrealistic as her grocery bag contained seven limes.

“Gwyneth Paltrow bought scallions, onions, a clove of garlic and fresh parley. She is doing her poor people shopping wrong,” wrote Twitter user J. Emanual.

Another social media user Linneah Tovstiga commented, “Gwyneth Paltrow if ur trying to buy all ur groceries for $29 u don’t buy 7 limes and 2 different kinds of lettuce and avocado.”

Going off of what Paltrow posted on her Twitter account, she would reportedly be consuming less than 1,000 calories a day, which is about half of what the national guidelines recommend for a healthy diet, according to Rebecca Vipond Brink, a lifestyle writer.

Gwyneth Paltrow was selected by celebrity chef Mario Batali as part of the #FoodBankNYCChallenged, according to the website Clickondetroit.com. The effort is reportedly being made in response to the recent cuts to food stamps.

Congress reportedly cut food stamps twice since 2013, which has led to increased numbers in soup kitchens and food pantries, according to the Food Bank for New York City’s website.

“For one week, walk in someone else’s shoes. By truly understanding what our friends and neighbors are going through, we will be better equipped to find solutions,” stated Batali.
