Mother Mariana Krim Finds Two Children Stabbed in Bath Tub By Nanny in New York

Oct 26, 2012 12:56 PM EDT

Marina Krim, a mother returning to her posh upper west side Manhattan apartment on Thursday night, found her two-year-old son and six-year-old daughter had been stabbed to death in the bathtub by their nanny, who then slit her own throat in a failed suicide attempt.

Marina Krim, arrived at her West 75th Street home at 5:34 p.m. after nanny Yoselyn Ortega, 50, failed to meet her for swimming lessons with the kids she was watching - Leo, 2, and Lucia, 6.

Ortega, survived her suicide attempt and is in police custody. The building's doorman told Krim the nanny hadn't left, and she went upstairs to find the reason for the hold-up. She found Ortega slashing her own neck, with both her wrists already slit and bleeding, according to the New York Times.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it's unclear how long the nanny had worked for the family. Ortega, who has no criminal record, had not been charged as of early Friday.

Krim, a pediatrician who was a stay-at-home mother until a year ago, kept a loving online journal of her children's lives, including apple-picking trips, family vacations and strolls down Broadway, the New York Post reported.

In Krim's latest entry - posted to "Life with the Little Krim Kids" just three hours before finding Lucia and Leo dead - the loving mom wrote about her son learning to put words together.

"Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible," Marina Krim wrote, describing her mood at the time as "amused."  The blog has now been taken down to respect the family's privacy.

Krim's husband is Kevin Krim, a senior vice president and general manager of CNBC Digital. Kevin Krim, had been on a business trip and was met by police at the airport when he returned to New York. Officers recounted the horror to him and he was escorted to the hospital.

Lucianne Minihan, whose husband is the building's superintendent, told DNAInfo: 'She was screaming at the top of her lungs. She was screaming, "Help me! Help me!"'

A makeshift memorial has been set up outside the apartment. No word yet has been released on whether the nanny will be charged.
