‘Top Gear’ Season 22 Episode 8: Jeremy Clarkson’s Final Episode Draws Less Viewers Than Expected; James May, Richard Hammond Presents With Elephant In The Room

Last June 28, "Top Gear" season 22 episode 8 aired. And with that, the BBC motoring show has ended as we know it. The episode marked the last appearance of presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond but it wasn't the ratings success it was expected to be.

Earlier predictions put the episode's viewership at 8.4 million but according in reality, it only drew 5.3 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Axed "Top Gear" presenter Jeremy Clarkson took to Twitter and accused the BBC of downplaying the episode which resulted in its less-than-stellar ratings. The 55-year-old presenter was sacked after a "fracas" with the show's producer.

"Sunday's final episode is comprised of previously unseen footage shot before Clarkson was dismissed from the BBC in March," Business Insider wrote.

Although Clarkson returned for voice over work for "Top Gear" season 22 episode 8, only co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond made an appearance. His absence - an elephant in the room - was addressed with a "large elephant figure in the room."

The episode wrapped up with brief but heartfelt goodbyes from May and Hammond. The two followed their colleague by not renewing their contracts and voluntarily left "Top Gear."

"Needless to say, it wasn't a satisfying end for one of the most controversial and entertaining teams of personalities on television," The Verge's Scott Kellum said.

After the episode ended, Clarkson thanked fans for their support and apologized for the way it ended.

Sad as it may be, Clarkson, May and Hammond are set to return with their own motoring show. They, along with former "Top Gear" producer Andy Wilman are close to signing a deal with Netflix as we have previously reported. British broadcaster ITV is also a contender for their new show.

After "Top Gear" season 22, the show will be fronted by radio DJ Chris Evans along with yet-to-be-confirmed new hosts, according to the BBC.
