Instagram Now Allows Better Photo Resolutions, What Does This Mean For Business Owners And Avid Users?

Jul 07, 2015 11:49 AM EDT | By Jon Lindley Agustin

For years, photo sharing app giant Instagram is limited to showcasing images at 640 x 640 photo resolution, limiting users from featuring shots taken on a better image quality. Last week, Instagram is making a big change by allowing higher resolution photos to be seen by your followers.

In a report by The Verge, a spokesperson for the photos sharing app said the company has started "gradually rolling out 1080 across iOS and Android" last week, which means that users can now be able to view at 1080 x 1080px high-definition resolution.

The website checked on the source code on Instagram's web view and found out that the new and recent photos being uploaded are now being saved in 1080px photo resolution, concluding that it is in preparation to making the full switch in the next weeks.

In a separate report by PC World, another Instagram spokeswoman said that the updates are now available but it is not yet finished. She added that most users should already have this improved Instagram photo resolution experience.

So what does this mean for business owners and avid Instagram users?

Asian couture and bridal wear designer Michael Sta. Maria, whose business is still not a large fashion house, told Franchise Herald that Instagram's improved photo resolution will help him feature his designs in a more detailed way.

"It will really help our visual market as it will cater to more detailed and more pronounced artistry," he shared. "It will also help our clients to have a clearer view of our aesthetic design. Higher photo resolution [means] higher appreciation."

Meanwhile, freelance fashion model Gen See who is an avid Instagram user regularly posting quality images, said this improved feature will be an advantage for her career.

"As a model and as individual who cares a lot on how my Instagram feed looks like, being able to post photos in a higher resolution is an advantage," she shared. "Before, whenever I post photos, Instagram would automatically change the resolution without my control, it sometimes makes my photos look blurry or pixelated."

She added that she gains followers whenever she posts good photos and that they have a greater chance to go viral.

"Having nice photos is what makes my feed look alive, it's what attracts more followers," she said.

Previously, iSchoolGuide reported that Instagram also announced its plans to open the photos sharing platform for all advertisers and businesses, by seeing them promote their products as users browse through their Instagram feed.
