Apple is expected to unveil its next-gen flagship smartphone and a report claimed to have the exact iPhone 6s release date pinned down. Also, the purpose of the long-rumored Force Touch tech may have finally been revealed.

Citing sources familiar with the Cupertino giant's plans, BuzzFeed News reported that Apple "intends to hold a special event the week of September 7, with Wednesday the 9th being the most likely date."

The said event will focus on the newest iPhones - the 6s and 6s Plus - but will supposedly feature other iOS devices such as the latest iPads and the Apple TV's successor as well.

Previous Franchise Herald reports have highlighted some of the device's expected specs including improved front and rear cameras, stronger chassis, an A9 chip and Force Touch.

Less than a month before the alleged iPhone 6s release date, how Force Touch works on the next-gen iOS device has finally been revealed.

"Instead of opening a large window of extra controls that did not fit on the screen, as is done on the Apple Watch, Force Touch on the iPhone is designed to skip existing lists of options or button presses," a source told 9to5 Mac.

Currently in use with the aforementioned Apple Watch and the new MacBook's trackpad, Force Touch distinguishes light and heavy taps that allows new ways to interact with the device.

The source also gave scenarios on how the technology can be used. Among them is how a user can use the technology to start turn-by-turn navigation by simply Force Touching the point of interest. Another is in the Music app where users can "deep press" a listed track which will bring up a list of commonly-used actions.

"Essentially, they provide a shortcut to the overwhelming - and ever increasing - apps, services, information and general functionality that's wrapped into one device," Forbes said.

"Force Touch is just another step in making it easier to operate your phone."

Although the technology won't bring any "radical functionality" in its first outing, the website thinks it "will develop over time."

The iPhone 6s release date is allegedly in September 9 during Apple's Fall iPhone event.
