Pivotal Software's board of directors has appointed Rob Mee, who recently served as the company's executive vice president of products and research development, to be the company's new CEO, replacing Paul Maritz, according to a press release issued by the company.

Maritz will remain as the newly appointed Executive Chairman of the company's board of directors.

Bloomberg adds that Mee co-founded Pivotal Labs, a company that specializes in developing tools to change how engineers build software.

The company was acquired by EMC Corp. in 2012.

Bits, a technology blog in the New York Times, added that the acquisition of Pivotal Labs was the foundation around with which Pivotal Software was built.

Mee said in the press release that he is "honored and excited to lead Pivotal" in the company's mission of transforming "how the world builds software."

He also praised Maritz, saying that "he has left an indelible legacy" and thanked him for his "long-sighted leadership."

"Rob Mee has been credited for shaping the software development cultures of some of Silicon Valley's most influential and valuable companies," Maritz said in the press release. "He's an exceptional leader and technologist, passionate about our mission, committed to our principles and values, and knows how to build a successful business."

Maritz added that he will remain "actively engaged with Pivotal."

Maritz's decision to step down as CEO of Pivot was his decision alone, according to Bits.

He added that it was easy to leave knowing the company has found its footing and is showing a healthy growth.

Pivotal also reported in the press release a financial milestone that the Pivotal Cloud Foundry, the company's cloud-native platform, achieved.

Pivotal Cloud Foundry has crossed the $100 million mark in annual bookings run-rate.

Maritz said in the press release that crossing the $100 million milestone is a good sign for the company's Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

He said it shows that it "is being embraced by customers and partners and is emerging as the leading open cloud platform."
