‘Fossil Q’ To Be Company’s Android Wear Smartwatch’s Name? Trademark Filed For Wearables

Fossil's upcoming Android Wear smartwatch could finally have a name, according to a trademark filing by the company.

Ubergizmo reported that the company has filed for a trademark for the name "Fossil Q" earlier this year in June.

"The trademark filing makes mention [of] wearable technology such as smatwatches and 'wearable digital electronic devices,' so [it's] safe to say that this is a wearable," the website said.

At last month's IDF 2015, Fossil unveiled a trio of wearable devices: an Android Wear smartwatch, a phone-connected watch and a connected bracelet, as Franchise Herald reported.

Also mentioned in the filing are "health, fitness, exercise and wellness monitoring devices," as pointed out by Phandroid.

The devices were developed in partnership with Intel and are thus powered by the company's processors. Beyond that, not much is known about their technical details.

From the preview though, Fossil's Android Wear smartwatch looks like Motorola's Moto 360, complete with the "flat-tire look."

But the device won't be the company's focus. CEO Kosta Kartsotis said his company will focus on "smarter watches" which he said is "just adding chips and extra functionality to existing watches," according to a Forbes report.

To that end, "Fossil Q" may apply to the company's entire wearable device line-up. Still, it could simply be the name of the smartwatch itself, according to Ubergizmo.

"Unfortunately due to the company being pretty secretive about the whole thing, we suppose we will never know until they make a more detailed announcement."

Pricing and release date for the wearable devices haven't been announced so far although Fossil said they will be out in time for this year's holiday season.

Fossil is far from the only company gearing up for a new Android Wear smartwatch. This month's IFA 2015 in Berlin is expected to play host to the unveiling of Samsung's Gear S2, Asus' ZenWatch 2 and possibly Motorola's Moto 360 2.

But those Android Wear devices will beat Fossil's own smartwatch to the punch as it won't launch until the holidays later this year.
