[WATCH] ‘Black Mass' Trailer: Johnny Depp’s Performance Buzzing For An Oscar Award?

Sep 01, 2015 11:35 PM EDT | By Pam Amantiad

Johnny Depp is unrecognizable once again in the new "Black Mass" trailer!

The film, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month, tells the story of Irish mobster, Whitey Bulger (Depp) and his misadventures.

With his brother, Massachusetts State Senator William "Billy" Bulger (Benedict Cumberbatch), somehow shielding him, he runs a mob organization which started out small but turned into a rival group for a Mafia family in South Boston.

He reportedly started working with the FBI to help bring down the said Mafia family and keep them off his territory, but according to the "Black Mass" trailer, he soon gets in too deep with the deal.

According to Rolling Out, the 1970s-set film is on the book written by Dick Lehr and Gerry O'Neill, reporters who used to work for the Boston Globe.

With its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week and its addition to the TIFF 2015 lineup later this month, the biopic is getting some major Oscar buzz. Even Depp himself is allegedly "excited" enough for the film to go on promotional tours for it.

"[Depp] said this is his favorite movie he's ever worked on," the film's producer Tyler Thompson reportedly told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that "It's a return to form for him, and it's the type of role you haven't seen him in in a long time. He and [director] Scott Cooper had amazing chemistry."

"He's playing a real-life scary sociopath, and he nailed it," co-producer Brian Oliver added. "Everyone wants to really see Johnny Depp do this role."

The Boston Globe further reported that Depp himself and the rest of the cast will be in town on Sept. 15, three days before its official local premiere, for a private screening of the film. The cast members, including Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton and Julianne Nicholson are also scheduled to attend the TIFF 2015 red carpet event on Sept 14.
