2016 Chevrolet Volt: Improves On Last-Gen Model But Not As Good As Plug-In Hybrid Rivals?

Compared to the model it replaces, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt is an improvement in many ways. But GM's new plug-in hybrid may not be as good as its rivals.

The new Volt hit showrooms earlier this week just ahead of the new Toyota Prius, according to AutoWeek. Much has been changed and improved for GM's next-gen plug-in hybrid.

Battery capacity is now rated at 18.4kWh and an all-new 111kW electric drive unit now powers the EV using two electric motors working with planetary gear sets. It shaves off 100 pounds from its predecessor.

The four-cylinder gasoline direct-injection engine's displacement was also bumped up to 1.5 liters and now makes 101 HP - this time, without the need for premium fuel - and good for 42 MPG. Chevrolet claims the Volt can do 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.

"EPA range for pure electric driving s now a whopping 53 miles, a 40 percent increase over the outgoing Volt," AW said.

Design-wise, Green Car Reports can't help but think that the 2016 Chevrolet Volt "looks remarkably similar" to the 2016 Cruze.

"The design of the new Chevy Volt is crisper, more angular and more aggressive than the rather slab-sided appearance of the previous model, which had a high cowl and short windows."

The plug-in hybrid's interior also gets a redesign with capacitive touch switches going away in favour of more conventional knob, switches and buttons. The 2016 Volt is now a five-seater although the middle seat is still more suitable for those with smaller in stature. It's also quieter inside.

Other knick-knacks include active safety systems and self-parking although Wired said it doesn't perform as well on perpendicular spots.

As for driving feel, although not sporty, the 2016 Volt is still "a lot more connected to the road than a Prius," according to AutoWeek. Starting at $33,995 before incentives, it's also cheaper than the outgoing model as well.

But with a new wave of rivals from the likes of Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Porsche, Wired said the Chevrolet Volt 2016 will be facing some tough competition "but at least we know the newest Chevy is in the game."
