Fiat Chrysler Voluntarily Recalls Close to 8,000 Jeep Renegades, Software in Touchscreen Radio Prone to Hacking

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has voluntarily recalled close to 8,000 Jeep vehicles in the U.S. for an upgrade in its software that is prone to hacking, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

The company will be recalling its 2015 Jeep Renegade model.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the latest recall of Fiat Chrysler will involve a tweak on the software of certain Renegade radios that is equipped with a 6.5-inch touch monitor.

More than half of the vehicle model that were being recalled haven't been sold yet and are still with the dealers.

The Guardian reported that Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that the recall campaign is "designed to protect connected vehicles from remote manipulation."

"If unauthorized, such interference constitutes a criminal act," the company said. "FCA US has already applied measures to prevent the type of vehicle manipulation demonstrated in a recent media report."

The Wall Street Journal also mentioned that Fiat Chrysler said they are unaware of any injuries related to the software issue.

Customers will receive a USB device that will install the software upgrade to the vehicle.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the latest recall is similar to what Fiat Chrysler did in July when it recalled more than 1.4 million vehicles need to be fixed following the hack of a Jeep Cherokee by two researchers.

The researchers were able to hack the vehicle through a technology soft spot in the Jeep Cherokee's Uconnect information system.

The Wall Street Journal stated that the hack allowed researchers to issue commands to the vehicles engine and steering.

The recall in July marked a new point in the automobile industry since it was the first recall made due to a possible cyber-attack on the vehicle.

The Guardian reported that Fiat Chrysler is conducting the recall out of an abundance of caution.

The company said that "no defect has been found."
