General Electric Co. (GE) has announced the creation of GE Digital, a move that will bring together the company's digital capabilities, according to a press release issued by GE.

GE Digital will integrate the company's Software Center, the expertise of the company's global IT and commercial software teams, and the industrial security strength of Wurldtech.

Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE, said in the press release that the creation of GE Digital will help GE in its goal to become the "premier digital industrial company."

"As GE transforms itself to become the world's premier digital industrial company, this will provide GE's customers with the best industrial solutions and the software needed to solve real-world problems," he said. "It will make GE a digital show site and grow our software and analytics enterprise from $6B in 2015 to a top 10 software company by 2020."

The company also said in the press release that the GE Digital will be led by Bill Ruh, chief digital officer of GE.

Forbes adds that the creation of GE Digital is a direct aim at IBM's own announcement, which is the creation of two new business units that will apply the company's portfolio in Big Data, analytics, and cognitive computing.

The company's portfolio will be applied to the Internet of Things (IOT) and Education markets.

Forbes adds that the move of GE into the more coherent digital and IOT strategy has been building for years.

The company has announced a major investment in Pivotal, a company that offers a modern approach to technology that organizations need to thrive in a new era of business innovation, in 2013.

Forbes adds that both GE and IBM are facing each other for dominance in the IOT ecosystem.

Though GE's strengths are more towards the Industrial Internet, the company also has its eye on the consumer and business focused technology.

Forbes adds that GE could become a real threat to IBM in the next 12 months.
