Spirit Airlines Fire: Plane Forced to Turn Back After Smoke Fills Cabin (VIDEO)

Oct 17, 2013 01:36 PM EDT | By Justin Stock

A Spirit Airlines Airbus 319 flight flying from Dallas Fort-Worth Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson International airport Tuesday was forced to turn back after lifting off into the air CBS News reported Wednesday.

While the airline said the plane landed safely back on the ground after experiencing what is being deemed a mechanical issue, text messages recalled a different story.

. "I love you make sure my kids know that forever," passenger Casey Rogers told his wife, Ashlee in a text message while she was on the ground CBS News reported. Rogers continued to keep in contact with Ashlee throughout the whole ordeal.

"We have a problem the plane, it's full of smoke, the engine has stop(ped) and the whole plane is shaking ... I love you don't forget it!! Pray for me. We are trying to land now. We are down we are ok."

It turns out, the pilots headed back to North Texas as a safety pre-caution. Smoke however had definitely clouded the plane's cabin. Pilots were also forced to shut down one engine, which is normal protocol for the airline. This allows the plane to run on one engine.

""I saw the engine blow up on the outside of the plane, fire and all that," Rogers told CBS News. "I'm thinking to myself, I see this on the movies. I'm usually on my couch eating popcorn. This never happened to me. And here I am 25,000 feet above the ground and this is happening to me."

No injuries were reported in the incident, and passengers boarded another plane en route to Atlanta.

"It was a normal landing and customers safely deplaned. We had another plane taking customers to Atlanta," Spirit Airlines spokesman Misty Pinson told CBS News in an e-mail.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident as a cause is not known.
