Amir Khan Says Fight With Floyd Mayweather Jr. Was Almost Sealed But American Backed Out

Nov 14, 2015 08:45 PM EST | By Rolly Gacelo

The other man in Amir Khan's next fight is yet to be named but he is persistent to get a big fish.

He is believed to be among the frontrunners to fight Manny Pacquiao but a few months ago, he almost struck a deal with undefeated welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The problem was that Floyd backed out last minute because 'he was scared' according to the British boxer.

"He was scared of me, wasn't he?" the former Olympian said in an interview with BoxingScene.com.

"We were this close to finalizing the fight. But his team backed out at the last moment. They knew that I would beat him. It was so disappointing. I could have knocked him out. It was such a shame that I didn't get the opportunity."

This is not the first time Khan fired shots towards the undefeated American fighter.

"I really believe Mayweather thinks I will beat him," Khan said in an interview with MMAFighting.com back in August of this year.

"And he definitely is scared. That's the reason this fight isn't happening. I really know how to beat him."

He also thinks his physique will do well against the boxer who puts more emphasis on defense.

"You need to be physically bigger than Floyd Mayweather as well. And I am. I think Floyd knowing all these advantages I have, he's probably thinking, 'I've only got one or two fights left in my career, do I really need a hard fight to finish this sport with?'"

There is nothing concrete yet about Amir Khan's next fight. It is also unlikely Floyd will rise to his challenge since he already retired. Manny Pacquiao tried to spread news that he is in talks with Pretty Boy's camp for a rematch but the latter denied something is going on.

"It's all b*******. What they're doing is this, once again, piggybacking off my name to sell pay-per-view numbers when he does go out there and fight again," Mayweather said in an interview with Fight Hype's Ben Thompson.
"Once again, I dissected this fighter, the so-called 'best fighter of our generation.' I dissected him; probably 10 to 2, really 11 to 1, but it's safe to say 10 to 2," he added.
