"Hannibal" season 4 hopes might not be dead after all.

The NBC TV series aired its last episode on Aug. 29 after it got canceled earlier in the season but the dream of having it extended for another run is not over.

Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the title role, says "Hannibal" season 4 renewal might happen. However, if it does, the network or studio interested should do it soon.

"I guess it's one of those things that it might be... it might happen," he said in an interview with IGN.

"But I also think that it has to happen fairly soon, because in three or four years, it might not be there anymore, the energy; The urge to do it from all kind of people and from the fans. So if it happens, it's got to happen in the next year, I guess."

The Danish actor also acknowledged the fact that many people continue to work to have the acclaimed horror show based on Thomas Harris novels back on TV again.

"That's all up to what people are doing and what Bryan is doing," he said. "Is there anyone who wants to pick it up and so on... So there have been a lot of rumors and so far, nothing has happened."

The rumors he is talking about concerning "Hannibal" season 4 renewal are networks interested. Amazon and Netflix were among them but the two streaming sites declined.

Series showrunner also once said that if ever the whole cast come back to shoot and continue the story, it might not be a season four. They might do a feature film.

"Obviously there is something appealing about seeing a full circle back to the big screen with this cast," he said when asked during Comic-Con what would be the silver lining of Hannibal getting canceled.

"So I can't deny that that would be the most awesome of results from this cancellation Hannibal - Season 3 - hugh dancyon NBC. At least for me, because it feels like a big-screen show in the way we produce it and the way it is formalistically designed. And having someone like David Slade direct a Hannibal film with Mads Mikkelson and Hugh Dancy is incredibly exciting."
