Mobile World Congress 2014: Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs and Release Date

Feb 25, 2014 08:30 AM EST | By Staff Writer

On Monday, Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It's what smartphone fans have all been waiting for: the official new specs and release date for the new Galaxy. So what exactly is in store for consumers? That's a good question.

Fitness fans will be pleased with the new smartphone. The Galaxy S5 includes a built-in heart rate monitor, pedometer and fitness tracker, according to The Washington Post. In order to actually use these features, though, you need to hold your finger over a sensor on the back of the phone. Those who really want to use a device for a workout will probably pick up the Gear Fit smartwatch, which has the same capabilities-but does it all in a much more user-friendly manner.

What other features are in store with the new smartphone? The Galaxy S5 is also waterproof and has a built-in fingerprint sensor, a feature that was first seen on the Apple iPhone.

"We've decided to go back to basics with the Galaxy S5 and focus on the features and things that matter most to our customers--namely the camera, ability to view and download data and content quickly and their health and wellbeing," said Simon Standford of Samsung during the Unpacked event at the Mobile World Congress, according to The Mirror.

In fact, the smartphone now has a 16 megapixel camera and the latest 4G technology. Yet many feel that there's little else that sets it aside from the S4. That said, it's still a good smartphone, though many are unsure how it will stack up against the iPhone 6, which is set to debut later this year.

Currently, the Galaxy S5 is set to be released to the public on April 11. Until then, we're just going to have to wait for the new smartphone-and hopefully gather some more information about the upcoming iPhone 6 to see how it stacks up.
