It's Relevance Over Sales: Why U2 Cancelled 2014 Tour

Aug 17, 2014 08:24 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

It seems the last four months of 2014 will pass by with no U2 tour, nor album, in sight.

Online forums from genuine U2 followers are thick of comments about the classic, A-1 band's decision in not coming up with anything for the year, putting plans off till 2015. Some U2 followers blame their change of manager. Maybe. Who knows? Other comments are more legitimate. That, when it comes to authentic U2 quality sound they are known for, they will not take any chances. They are more concerned of quality, than quantity. So far, the results have been wanting.

"That magic that the band always seems to capture ... they have yet to capture it," one source from Billboard was quoted to have said.

In a way, this is anticlimactic. The U2 opened up the year 2014 with a Golden Globe award. They rendered relevant performances in The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and the Academy Awards. They gave out a charity song for the Superbowl. In a way, these served as preliminaries leading to the much bigger, more expansive album and tour, but all the firing of cylinders became a mere whisper.

The music industry of worldly proportion knows why U2's staying power remained so. The honesty in reflecting the times through their songs and lyrics is relentless through the years. But they're no autotune. They are all aging and this has slowed them down. U2 wants the album to maintain, if not surpass their previous critically-acclaimed hits. At the same time, they want to be physically and mentally prepared for the energy and passion required during the tour. In the meantime, all efforts are in the studio to find the X factor that will capture the magic, so to speak. Once they have found it, they can confidently face the music world with their new album.

This isn't too flimsy reason  why it's taking them long to finish their album. It's laudable, in fact. They want to enthrall the listeners with their sound, the kind worthy of preservation to be remembered for posterity and so they need time. They always want to be remembered as The U2. And they are not taking any chances to finish it just like that.
