Syria Islamists And Militants Recruiting Hundreds Of Teen French To Become Terrorist, French Official Reveals; Two Girls Turned Islamists Arrested

Sep 01, 2014 10:00 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

More and more people from Western countries are joining Syrian militants, a top French official have recently revealed. In a Sunday report by Reuters, the country's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that at least 800 French have fled the country to join Islamist groups in Syria.

Cazeneuve spoke in the wake of an arrest made by local authorities involving two teenage girls who were allegedly about to join jihad. These two girls, aged 15 and 17, were suspected of bombing the Great Synagogue of Lyon and have already been charged for conspiracy to commit a terrorist act. Authorities also said that the girls have been under the radar of French forces for a long time now.

Aside from the two girls, 60 more people are being watched by French authorities for possible association to Syria Islamists. There are also some 900 locals suspected to have been implicated in jihad or have participated in their activities or planning to join Syrian Islamists.

"These girls were part of a network of young Islamists who were being monitored by security services," an unnamed security source told Newsweek.

Minister Cazeneuve is alarmed by this trend and is calling on his people to be observant of their kin. NBC wrote quoting the official that "parents who suspect that their children are displaying signs of "violent radicalization" are urged "to call a hotline he created in late April." In a data released by the Interior Ministry, it is found that since that time, "300 reports have been called in, a quarter of which were regarding children and 45 percent of which involved females."

"Must I wait for a new Mehdi Nemmouche to fire before I act?" Cazeneuve asked referring to Nemmouche, a Frenchman who fought in Syria and killed for people at a Jewish Museum in Brussels on May of this year.
