April 14, 2014 was the beginning of a nightmare for the parents of hundreds of schoolgirls at Chibok boarding school in northeastern Nigeria who were kidnapped by armed men later known to be the Islamist group Boko Haram.

According to a survivor’s account, they were awakened by the sound of gunshot and saw men approaching them and thought they were soldiers saving them from a possible militant attack.

This abduction has caused a global outrage and ignited a huge campaign for the rescue of the reportedly 276 girls kidnapped. It’s has been 5 months since the campaign #BringBackOurGirls started and people are beginning to become more distressed with the slow investigation.

In an article from the Huffington Post, the town where the girls were kidnapped, Chibok, is cut off by militants, who have been attacking villages in the region and ever since the incident, there has been little progress. In another article from the same website, it is stated that until now, not one girl has been rescued, other countries have made little progress, Chibok is still in danger and governmental issues such as politicians are funding Boko Haram.

Boko Haram became active in 2003 and is concentrated in northern Nigeria. The group considers all who do not follow its strict ideology as infidels, whether they are Christian or Muslim and they demand the adoption of Sharia law in all of Nigeria.

Boko Haram means "Western education is sinful”, is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.
