How much does virginity cost? A court in China has put a tag on it, saying that it would cost $5,000. The court awarded a Chinese woman the said amount for compensatory damage after a man violated "her right to virginity", a report said.

According to AFP, the woman sued her former lover, whom she met online in 2009, for swindling her out of her virginity. She also accused him of deceiving her when he pretended to be single and promised her to be his wife.

Later, the woman found out that he was already married.

The woman, surnamed Chen, accused the man of violation of her rights to virginity and health.

The court awarded the woman, surnamed Chen, $5,000 for the damage, which was originally amounting to more than $81,000 and $250 in psychological damages and medical costs, respectively.

The court found the original amount to be excessive; however, it did not provide an explanation as to how it arrived at that definite amount, the report said.

"Violating the right to virginity might lead to harm to a person's body, health, freedom and reputation... it ought to be compensated," the court said.

The court also argued that "right to virginity" should be protected by law as it was a "moral right" in relation to "sexual freedom, sexual safety and sexual purity".

According to the report, the case and the judgment have been confirmed by the Pudong New Area People's Court.

It also said the man, surnamed Li, has appealed the decision. He did not appear in court and was only represented by his lawyer.

The Paper said the two met in 2009 online after which they began dating in 2013. Later, they traveled to Singapore where they consummated their relationship.

Chen ruptured into Li's home after their contact suddenly broke off, only to find him with his wife.
