Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru reaches Southern California

Fast food and baked goods franchise Dunkin' Donuts has opened a free-standing Southern California drive-thru in Downey, marking the first of its kind in the region.

Located on 9070 Firestone Boulevard, the drive-thru is set to open on Tuesday, Sept. 23, NBC Los Angeles reports.

Dunkin' Donuts, originally based in Massachusetts, has boosted efforts to expand its presence in the country's West Coast in recent years. The franchise's first Southern California location, which is not a drive-thru, is located in Modesto.

Whittier and Long Beach, cities not too far away from Downey, are also expected to open new locations in the region.

Alongside opening new locations in Southern California, the company is also looking to phase out its trademark foam cups and transition to recyclable-plastic versions, Detroit News reports.

"Consumers want a more environmentally friendly product," chief supply chain officer Scott Murphy said, according to the newspaper.

"But they don't want to sacrifice the performance of the current foam cup. We've been working on this for five years. It's an interesting problem."

Dunkin' Donuts has not announced the number of locations it plans on opening in Southern California.
