Giant Squid Thawed Out For Research; Can The Tales About Kraken Be True?

Someone once said, “We know more about the surface of the Moon and about Mars than we do about the deep sea floor...”

A few months ago, Captain John Bennett and his crew were sailing through Antartica’s remote Ross Sea when they unexpectedly hauled up a giant squid with tentacles as big as fire hoses and eyes as big as dinner plates, Yahoo News reports. The squid is a female, and its eight arms are each well over a metre (3.3ft) long.

The 770-pound colossal squid was finally thawed out after being frozen for eight months. Scientists are now speculating if the tale about ‘Kraken’ or giant sea-monster squid told by witnesses and sailors is true. Kat Bolstad, a squid scientist from the Auckland University of Technology and the leader of the team who examined the caught sea creature was in awe with the discovery even describing it as “very big, very beautiful”

"This is essentially an intact specimen, which is almost an unparalleled opportunity for us to examine," Bolstad said. "This is a spectacular opportunity."

The examination is available online and has been viewed by thousands of people from around the world.

Bennett said that he very excited with the previous catch, "It was partly alive, it was still hanging onto the fish,” he said, "just a big bulk in the water. They're huge, and the mantle's all filled with water. It's quite an awesome sight."

This wasn’t Bennett’s first big catch, seven years ago, they also caught a giant squid and is now on display at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa.
