A BlackBerry Revival?

Sep 23, 2014 06:04 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Blackberry is seeking a revival now. It just launched a new phone that hopefully would set the pace for the company that has been struggling in the past few years.

The new phone from Blackberry is called the Passport and is designed and meant to compete with the best-selling smart-phones that are available today, the iPhone6 and Galaxy S5. The move is supposed to win back a sizable portion of the market that was lost from the company.

Blackberry CEO John Chen has earlier made strong promises to consumers and investors that the structuring process of the company would soon be over. Now it's time to made good of those promises.

This period might be one of the most crucial in the company's history. After the unveiling of the new phone the company would be announcing its quarterly earnings. These events would set the tone for the rest of the year and could make or break the company that has been struggling.

The launch of the Passport is being seen as more than just the simple unveiling of a new piece of hardware. It is being hailed as the beginning of a revival for the company that has once dominated the market.

Chen has revealed that the phone should sell in the United States for $599 without any contract. He revealed that the phone would actually cost more than $700. They are lowering the price as part of a strategy that would drum up interest for the new phone.

The $599 price tag for the Passport would make it a strong competitor to both the iPhone and the Galaxy, which has higher prices. The launch for the Passport just came right after iPhone 6 was also launched. Apple's money-making phone has millions of sales already in just a few days. Blackberry has more modest aims for its phone.
