The 61-year-old guitarist was announced to be taking a break from the band due to a sickness that is then revealed to be dementia.

In a statement to People magazine, Young's family confirmed his diagnosis thanking fans "for respecting their privacy".

AC/DC band mates released a statement on their website early 2014 explaining that their lead guitarist, "taking a break from the band due to ill health."

Malcolm thanked in a statement the group's loyal legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.

AC/DC also asked that Malcolm and his family's privacy be respected during this time.

"The band will continue to make music," they said.

Malcolm Young founded the band in 1973 alongside brother Angus Young and was later on joined by vocalist Brian Johnson, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Phil Rudd.

Young's nephew, Stevie Young, took his place as the band's guitarist and was praised "magnificent" by the band.

In an interview with Classic Rock magazine the band said: "When you're recording with this thing hanging over you and your work mate isn't well, it's difficult...But I'm sure he was rooting for us. He's such a strong man. He's a small guy, but he's very strong. He's proud, and he's very private, so we can't say too much. But fingers crossed he'll be back."

The band was declared to be fan favorites to headline Glastonbury Music Festival next year with British band Muse and Fleetwood Mac.

The rock group is set to release new album "Rock or Bust" on December 1 and to go on tour to promote the said album.
