KFC controversy over alcohol hand wipes

Oct 16, 2014 01:37 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

A Kentucky Fried Chicken employee in England has received international attention for refusing to give an alcohol hand wipe to a customer-the move was done out of fear of offending Muslim customers.

"They told me it might offend other customers. I've never experienced anything like this before, I couldn't believe it," customer Graham Noakes told the Leicester Mercury, according to The Blaze.

"Why shouldn't I be allowed a wipe for my hands?" he added. "They use wipes in hospital. What happens when we start being told we can't have wipes there? ... I just can't understand it."

The English location enforced a store policy banning the wipes. The store also serves halal chicken, according to the site.

The KFC franchise, however, has stopped enforcing the rule after it was revealed to be inconsistent with the company's policies.

"There was a misunderstanding at the store in question, but the wipes are now being used again," the spokesman concluded.

"We're sorry for the customer's experience."

Representatives of Muslim organizations have responded to the story publically, mentioning alcohol hand wipes do not necessarily break religious rules.
