"Dead Island 2" is the sequel to the 2011 role-playing horror survival game "Dead Island".  Publisher Deep Silver also launched "Dead Island: Riptide" in 2013 as a stand-alone video game.

The franchise received fair reviews from critics, with a low 70% average across all platforms including PC, Xbox and PlayStation 3 according to GameRankings. Among the praises the game received is its overall feel, however the game also has its fair share of negative criticisms as in Computer and Video Games comments: "This budget zombie thriller ain't too pretty but could manage to capture a cult following." The amount of violence in the game also didn't allow "Dead Island" to be released in Germany.

According to the official site, upon the "Dead Island 2" release date fans will experience Set after the events of Dead Island and Escape Dead Island, Dead Island 2 takes you to sunny California in the aftermath of the zombie outbreak. As the "Dead Island 2" release date comes closer, creators explain that though Techland was the initial developer and is now developing "Dying Light" with Warner Bros., the two games are still different in so many ways.

Maciej Binkowski of Techland shares to Eurogamer that although the two games might be similar, he isn't concerned. "They're out to create something different: it's Dead Island, it's a different experience. It's all very colourful and I guess kind of goofy. So I think we're pretty safe, because our game ["Dying Light"] is much more mature and dark, and we're aiming at different unique features such as freedom of movement [and] the day-night cycle."

"Dead Island 2" release date has been set  for Spring 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
