Escape From New York is getting a reboot. Deadline has reported that the John Carpenter film released in 1981 is getting a remake under Joel Silver's Silver Pictures. Silver has reportedly teamed up with Studio Canal to make the post-apocalyptic film set in the island of Manhattan.

The original movie which starred Kurt Russell as the one-eyed Snake Plissken, a convict taken out of prison to rescue the president after his aircraft crash lands in the futuristic wastelands of New York.

Not long ago, New Line Cinema attempted a remake with Gerard Butler playing the main character. Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy were also potentials to play Snake Plissken.

Starlog reported that Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam is the top choice of producers to play the role of the patch-eyed hero.

Speculated plot from Starlog via Movie Fone:

"the film will be much more focused on a team of characters, rather than just Plissken as the main protagonist. The flick will follow Plissken as he "traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President,"

Hunnam is also top contender for Guy Ritchie's adaptation of  "King Arthur", which leaves fans wondering if he'll have enough time to do an Escape From New York reboot, not to mention an upcoming Pacific Rim sequel

"currently the top contender now that his run on SONS OF ANARCHY has concluded, although it is unclear if his commitments to PACIFIC RIM 2 will leave the actor unavailable."

"Silver Pictures has already began to commission pre-production artwork from independent artists featuring Hunnam as the one-eyed antihero, possibly to shop to a co-financier at this year's American Film Market. And while Silver Pictures still aims for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK to jumpstart a trilogy for the character(s), the origin story aspect for the first film will be played down. "Snake's past will be seen in brief glimpses throughout the film, blending into his reality via Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,"

Stay tunes for more updates on the Escape From New York remake.
