National Retail Federation Report: ‘Frozen’ Dethrones Barbie as Top Toy For Girls

Disney's "Frozen" merchandise takes the top spot as the number one toy for girls these holidays, beating out long-time winner Barbie, according to the National Retail Federation's 2014 Holiday Top Toys Survey.

"Frozen" merchandise cut the 11-year streak of Barbie, with 20 percent of parents surveyed that they plan to buy Elsa, Anna and Olaf toys for little girls against Barbie'e 17 percent hold, according to the NRF, the world's largest retail trade association.

"Parents will not have to go far to find good deals on the toys their children have put at the top of their lists," said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.

"Retailers have spent weeks preparing for the holiday rush to make sure that the season's hottest toys are both easy to find in stores and online, and competitively priced."

Disney's Frozen was a big hit worldwide, bringing in over $1 billion in revenue, so much so that Mattel began putting its other big brands on the side-lines.

Meanwhile, Mattel introduced Barbie back in 1959, but with the rapid change in technology nowadays, many girls are choosing electronic toys such as watches and tablets, and Walt Disney's "Frozen" dolls.

Back in 2009, Barbie conquered over 25 percent of the market share in the United States but dramatically slipped to 19.6 percent in 2013. Barbie sales slipped 21 percent in the most recent quarter, Bloomberg reports.

"Barbie has been the top girls' toy for over a decade, but it is no surprise that Disney's Frozen has taken the top seat as children have had it on the mind as far back as Halloween," said Prosper's Consumer Insights Director Pam Goodfellow.

Tech Times reports that unlike Barbie, who has been experiencing a setback recently because of a sexist book on Amazon which reportedly demoralized females and female engineers, "Frozen" sisters Anna and Elsa sends a positive message of self-worth and respect.

On a side note, Mattel owns the rights to both "Frozen" merchandise and Barbie products, so it's a win-win situation for this top-dog toy manufacturer these holidays.
