Acer Launches C720 Chromebook With Core i3 Processor; Taiwanese Electronic Corporation Stepping Up

Dec 16, 2014 12:44 PM EST | By Josh Samuel

When Taiwanese Electronic Corporation Acer released its C720 Chromebook, it became the first company to deliver something with a Core i3 processor, which means it performs well in multi-tasking, whether you are playing your favorite game or searching the web.

Hardware

Users of the C720 are not quite satisfied with its keyboards as buttons are too shallow one might experience missed key presses. The keyboard does not easily recognize every keystroke as relayed by some users. Also, the C720 is "weighty" at 2.76 pounds, having a thickness of 0.8 inch, as compared to ASUS C200 which only weighs at 2.5 pounds, also at 0.8 inch thick. Nevertheless, it is still easy to carry compared to other laptops and netbooks. You may also find several ports such as 2 USB connections, a full-sized HDMI socket, SD card reader, headphone jack and a standard lock slot which are all essentials in its competitors.

Battery Life

The C720 powered by Core i3 lasts up to 7 hours and 53 minutes even with continuous video playback. Acer claims that the equipment can stay up until 8.5 hours, but the actual staying oower is not that bad. According to users, the ASUS C2000 still emerges as the big winner for managing to last an unbelievable 11 hours.

Software

The development of C720's software is very slow as the only new features they have included in the new device is a full pinch-to-zoom support, background uploading for Google+ photos, as well as improved file management.

Conclusion

Based on users' experience, Acer C720 is still likable and worth buying although not one to impress at first glance. According to Ars Technica, the device's "real strength" is its ability to handle basic computing function. Computer World agrees by saying that that C720 "gives you an impressive amount of computing power for your hard-earned bucks, and its Haswell chip allows the C720 to "deliver outstanding battery life."
