Toy Story 4 Release Date Set For 2017; Director Bob Iger Returns To Give Buzz And Woody A Fourth Installment

With 2010's Toy Story 3 breaking records at the box office, grossing more than $1 billion and taking home two Academy Awards in 2011, it wasn't long after that rumors started to circulate about a follow up. Today, it has been officially confirmed that Buzz, Woody and the rest of the gang will be returning for a fourth installment.

Bob Iger, chairman for the Walt Disney Company announced that the fourth installment has been given the green light with Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar, John Lasseter in the director's chair.

Lasseter also directed the first two parts of Toy Story; has co-director credits in A Bug's Life and Cars.

Bob Iger tipped his hat off to Lasseter, in a statement via Entertainment Weekly:

"John created Toy Story and directed the first two films, and it's great to have him back directing one of our most valuable properties,"

Lasseter expressed his joy on returning to the brand, saying (quote via firstshowing.net):

"We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don't want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what's gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz's story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee, and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie-and I wanted to direct it myself."

Rumors of another Toy Story movie first came when Tom Hanks casually said that there was another film in the works back in 2011, the franchise has remained dormant since then with Pixar neither confirming nor denying the news.

Toy Story 4's description in Pixar/Disney's official press release is a movie that "opens a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the 'Toy Story' gang."

Toy Story 4 is set to arrive in US theaters in June 2017.
