Usain Bolt 'on Another Planet', Says US Wallace Spearmon

Aug 09, 2012 06:45 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

Usain Bolt became the first man to retain both Olympic sprint titles as won the gold in the 200 meter final at the London Olympics 2012 on Thursday.

"It's what I came here to do. I'm now a legend," Bolt said, according to the Associated Press. "I'm also the greatest athlete to live. I've got nothing left to prove." Bolt led home a Jamaican medal sweep in 19.32 seconds,

It's no doubt that Bolt is undoubtedly the world's fastest man and almost certainly the greatest-ever sprinter but the title of the world's best athlete belongs to American Ashton Eaton who won the Olympic decathlon title.

Putting the field far enough behind that he could slow up over the last few strides and put his left index finger to his mouth to tell any critics to shush, Bolt won the 200 meters in 19.32 seconds Thursday night, making him the only man with two Olympic titles in that event.

This was a pure Jamaican sweep, with his training partner and pal Yohan Blake getting the silver in 19.44, and Warren Weir taking the bronze in 19.84 -- more than a half-second behind the champion. Bolt also won 100 meter gold on Sunday, duplicating the 100-200 double he produced at the Beijing Games four years ago. The only difference this time is that he did not set new world records. In Beijing, Bolt became the first man to win the 100, 200, and 4x100 relay at a single Summer Games, and all in world-record times, no less.

In London, he became the first man to win two Olympic golds in the 200, and he did it consecutively, too.

The U.S. 200 meter competitor was undoubtedly disappointed with the defeat. "The guy is just on another planet right now," Wallace Spearmon, the American who finished fourth in 19.90, said between sobs of disappointment.

Once Bolt made it past the finish line, his showmanship kicked into gear. The Jamaican super athlete got done on the track field and did five pushups, representing one for each medal that he has won so far at the Olympics.
