Angelina Jolie Criticizes ISIS And International System's Credibility; Thinks Efforts To Protect Innocents Against Extremists Are Failing

Angelina Jolie is not just a big name in the entertainment industry. She is also being admired for her huge involvement in humanitarian works.

The 39-year old wife of another global star, Brad Pitt, has been travelling the world to provide help for people in need.

An ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Jolie has received numerous awards for her humanitarian works for refugees including the inaugural Humanitarian Award from the Church World Service's Immigration and Refugee Program and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2013.

The issue of refugee is big right now, especially in the Middle East. ISIS, or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has been terrorizing many people in their location while also hurting other countries by decapitating several foreign hostages, some in front of video camera.

So when Angelina Jolie got another chance to visit Iraq, she made people know what she feels about the ongoing conflict. She also challenged the international system to do a better job of protecting the innocent from ISIS.

"Too many innocent people are paying the price of the conflict in Syria and spread of extremism. The international community has to step up and do more," she said.

"It is not enough to defend our values at home. We have to defend them here, in the camps and in the informal settlements across the Middle East, and in the ruined towns of Iraq and Syria."

Angelina Jolie added, she knows what mothers are feeling right now with their children getting kidnapped by the extremists.

"I have met mothers whose children have been kidnapped by ISIS. As a parent, I couldn't imagine a greater horror. They are overwhelmed by thoughts of what is happening to their children," she explained.

"The spill-over from the Syria conflict has been devastating. The brutality of the conflict and speed and scale of the displacement has shocked the world. Help has come, but not nearly enough."

To prevent more of this from happening, Angelina Jolie challenged authorities to do a better job in protecting the victims of the senseless war.

"At stake are not only the lives of millions of people and the future of the Middle East, but also the credibility of the international system. What does it say about our commitment to human rights and accountability that we seem to tolerate crimes against humanity happening in Syria and Iraq on a daily basis?"
