'Shazam' Movie News: Dwayne Johnson Discusses His Black Adam Role and DC's Shared Universe

Feb 12, 2015 06:57 PM EST | By Fred Yelland

The much anticipated crossover film "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and the villain-centric film "Suicide Squad" are just two titles that make up the list of releases from DC leading up all the way to 2020. "Shazam," meanwhile, joins that list in 2019.

Still without an actor to play the lead role, the movie has already acquired the talents of Dwayne Johnson to play Shazam's enemy, Black Adam.

Black Adam, a dark wizard and nemesis of "Shazam" has been on the path of changing from a villain to become more of an anti-hero in the comic books. Also getting his powers from the same source of the main hero, he is also a ruler of Khandaq, a small middle eastern village.

In an interview with Total Film, the actor briefly discussed his upcoming role and cleared things up about Shazam's shared universe.

"I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero. It's all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he's given the powers, he utilized them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology," he said.

Initially, there was a confusion if "Shazam" would be sharing the same universe as "Batman V Superman" and other upcoming installments. The actor cleared up the issue, confirming that the movie is indeed sharing the same universe sa Zack Snyder's "Batman V Superman."

"One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there's a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humor."

"Shazam" is expected to arrive in theaters on Apr. 5, 2019.
