Feb 14, 2015 11:11 PM EST | By Fred Yelland

Michael Fassbender will play the lead role in 20th Century Fox's big screen adaptation of "Assassin's Creed," confirmed releasing in 2016.

Progress has been slow with the project since it was announced last year, at one point even rumored to be shelved due to Fassbender's commitments to Bryan Singer's "X: Men Apocalpyse" movie, who is also releasing in the same year eight months prior to "Assasin's Creed."

But it seems that the actor has pulled through, chief executive officer Yves Guillemot has announced that the movie has entered production and is expected to start with filming soon.

As it stands, little is known about the project and its plot. It will be helmed by Justin Kurzel of "Snowtown" and upcoming movie "Macbeth," another film Fassbender is slated to appear in.

Marion Cotillard, famous for her parts in the Christopher Nolan directed "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Inception" has been reported joining the cast of "Assassin's Creed." Coincidentally, she's also appearing in "Macbeth."

It also has been reported that the "Inglorious Basterds" actor has been made a major producer and shareholder to the rights of Ubisoft's beloved title, securing his place in potential sequels.

"Assassin's Creed" is originally an open world historical fiction action-adventure video game series that follows main character Desmond Miles, an ordinary bartender but is also a decendant of several lines of ancient assassins. Although brought up to be an assassin, he instead opted to live an ordinary life.

Aware of his lineage with assassins, Desmond is kidnapped by a corporation called Abstergo Industries with the intent of using him to revisit his ancestor's history with the goal to alter the future. He uses the "Animus," a device that allows him to experience his "ancestral memories."

The first video game was released on Nov. 13, 2007. "Assasin's Creed" the movie, arrives in theaters on Dec. 21st, 2016.
