New 'Tekken 7' Filipino Character Josie Rizal Shrouded In Controversy; Philippine Government Not Impressed With The National Heroe's Representation?

Following the recent launch of the new and only "Tekken 7" Filipino character, Josie Rizal, a government body in the Philippines, NCCA called out the rather misrepresentation of the country's national hero.

According to the local news site, GMA Network, Dr. Leodenito Cañete, a coordinator of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts' (NCCA's) Bayaning Bayan program in the Visayas, is not at all impressed with the game's representation of the national hero, Jose Rizal, where the character was inspired.

The cultural educator is apparently trying to make "correct" the image of Rizal after it is thought to have no resemblance to represent the country in any way.

"It's hard for us to prevent other countries from making characters like this because Philippines is very popular around the world," Cañete explained.

However, according to the government body's secretariat, Cañete is not an NCCA official but rather "he is just a coordinator of one of the NCCA's numerous projects."

While the "Tekken 7" new character, Josie Rizal, is named after Philippines' national her, Jose Rizal, Adonis Durado, one of the famous artist in the country thinks that there is no trace of a Filipino trait from the character.

"The problem with Josie Rizal's character is too obvious: it doesn't have any trace of Filipino-ness-neither in her physical attributes nor in her outfit," Durado said according to Gulf News.

"If her fighting style is purportedly eskrima, where are the arnis sticks? So the Filipino-inspired name is simply a token," Durado added referring to the character's fighting skills.

However, while few people reportedly felt offended with the "Tekken 7" Filipino character, Josie Rizal, GMA Network reported that cosplay artists are already going crazy about the game's new addition.

Prior to the release of Josie Rizal, "Tekken 7" has only 20 characters set to join the game namely, Claudio, Katarina, Lucky Chloe, Shaheen, Kazuya, Heihachi, Lars, Asuka, Lili, Alisa, Xiaoyu, Feng, Paul, Marshall Law, Steve, Leo, Hwoarang, King, Dragunov and Bryan.

Game creator and producer Katsuhiro Harada also announced that the iconic game is now available for new generation console gamers. In addition, "Tekken 7" is now going to run on Unreal Engine 4.

"With Unreal Engine 4, we can rapidly achieve visual quality expected on next-gen platforms and go beyond it," Harada said. "Not only is Unreal Engine 4 powerful and easy to use, but it also allows us to bring 'Tekken 7' to any platform we desire."

While, "Tekken 7" will be available for the PS4, Xbox One a release date has yet to be announced.
