Theo James Can't Come Back To 'Underworld 5' Because Of 'Divergent' Franchise! Original Cast Kate Beckinsale Ready For Her Return?

For a while Theo James has been rumored to return and even lead the "Underworld 5" movie following his highly acclaimed performance as David in "Underworld: Awakening," which was released in 2012.

The Hollywood Reporter  even reported that James has been asked to return to the franchise and lead the "Underworld 5" movie with a working title of "Next Generation."

"Sources say there was an option on James because of his work on the previous film, and he'll star opposite two new female characters," THR claimed.

With the publication's statement also comes rumors that original cast member Kate Beckinsale, who has been leading the team from the start of the movie series, is no longer reprising her role for the fifth installment.

Meanwhile Theo James himself offered to clarify rumors involving him with the new action-packed vampire survival movie during a talk with Digital Spy.

"No, they have something in the works, but my involvement in it is... I think it's going be very difficult to do that with these ['Divergent'] movies, and my other commitments," James explained.

While he did no specifically mention that he is no longer involved in the "Underworld" franchise, his statement claiming that the "Divergent" franchise has been keeping him busy only proves that it's impossible for him to reprise his role as David in "Underworld 5" movie.

Noting that the 30-year-old English actor has two more "Divergent" films to shoot this year with co-star Shailene Woodley.

Kate Beckinsale, on the other hand, could still return in the franchise according to writer-producer Len Wiseman.

"There's a few things being developed right now and there's some characters that we really like," Wiseman told IGN

"There's kind of more of a spin-off of some of the characters like we did with Rise of the Lycans and then another film is also being developed in the works with Kate possibly as well, and then there's a television series as well.

Adding, "It's kind of expanding that universe in many ways."

While no official date has been announced yet, "Underworld 5" movie is reportedly slated for a 2016 release date.
