Oculus Virtual Reality Headset Causes Nausea and Dizziness? The VR Device Still Expected To Boom Despite Challenges, Reports Say

Jun 22, 2015 12:50 PM EDT | By Jon Lindley Agustin

When Facebook picked up Oculus for $2 billion, the virtual reality headset set for release in the first quarter of 2016 promises a new way for users to interact with the virtual world. But users who tried out the device feared that the virtual reality headset might cause dizziness.

Fudzilla.com writer Fuad Abazovic recently shared an uncomfortable experience when he tried out the Oculus virtual reality headset at the Electronic Entertainment Expo which showed off some the device's features.

"My biggest concern is the fact that Virtual Reality glasses are making you slightly dizzy. There are more than a few people who feel really bad after minutes of using Oculus," he wrote in his report. "If 3D glasses at the movie theater make you dizzy and uncomfortable, Oculus VR will be your kryptonite."

The writer said he was able to try the device for a few minutes long, and wondered what will happen when using the Oculus virtual reality headset after one or more hours of gameplay.

Meanwhile, Tech Crunch columnist Tadhg Kelly warned of a camera feature in general virtual reality headsets that will disorient players and make them dizzy.

"You may already know how annoying cut-scenes and quicktime events can be in games," Kelly wrote. "When badly implemented what they tend to do is simply take control of the camera (and the other controller) functions temporarily and then place you into autopilot so that you see the Big Important Cut Scene That The Studio Spent All Its Money On."

"Please promise me that you'll never do that in VR," he pointed out. "Why? You'll disorient players, make them spin-dizzy and vomit."

Another report by Times Record said nausea is also among the effects of some gameplays of Oculus virtual reality headset.

"When it's done wrong, virtual reality can produce nausea. That can happen in first-person experiences such as the indie game 'Narcosis,' in which players explore an undersea facility," the report said.

The report also noted, however, that the Oculus virtual reality headset is still set to "boom" despite these challenges.
