HTC Vive VR Release Date On Track Says HTC Exec; Says Virtual Reality Headset Not Possible Without Valve Partnership [Video]

Jul 03, 2015 10:15 AM EDT | By Jason Fonbuena

Who would have thought a tech company known for making smartphones would eventually become one of the dominant forces of virtual reality? HTC executive director Dan O'Brien said it wouldn't have been possible without their partnership with Valve. He also went on record to say that the HTC Vive VR release date is on track.

The HTC exec revealed as much in an interview with VR Focus.

"Valve, actually, and HTC have a lot of philosophical alignment in terms of marriage and how you guys actually work together," he said.

He went on to describe Valve as "pioneers" and "craftsmen in their trade and the products that they make," just like HTC.

"I mean, if you look at the [phones and the designs] that we put behind those phones, you know, our design team, that's a very big part of their DNA, and when you can take two companies that have this amazing quality aspect of what they bring to the table for the consumers, you combine those things and then you will produce something amazing that you probably couldn't have done individually on your own."

As it stands, HTC takes care of the manufacturing side while Valve tackles software, according to VR Focus. Valve's SteamVR allows the virtual reality headset to track user movements via the laser-based Lighthouse positional tracking technology. This can then be replicated within an area of up to 15-feet by 15-feet.

While O'Brien gave an interesting history lesson, he stopped short of revealing the HTC Vive VR release date although he assured that the device is on track.

Developer kits have started shipping to developers and movie studios as Franchise Herald previously reported. PlayHubs is also set to host a VR-focused meetup featuring the device this month. The consumer HTC Vive VR release date is tipped for holiday 2015.
