Tesla Model X SUV Gets Twice As Many Reservations As Model S Despite Key Details Still Under Wraps; Deliveries To Start Q3 2015 Says CEO Elon Musk

The all-electric Tesla Model X SUV has proven more popular than its stablemate, the Model S as it gets twice as many reservations than it does.

EV Obsession reported that the figures come from the Tesla Motors Club (TMC) and ElecTrek's Fred Lambert. According to the website, the Model X already has 24,000 reservations. By contrast, the Model S had 12,000 reservations before deliveries started in 2012.

Lambert said that members of TMC have been gathering data on reservations since the Model X prototype was unveiled in February 2012.

"Although those reservations don't guarantee orders, they require a reimbursable deposit of $5,000 for the production version or $40,000 for the limited signature version, therefore making the reservations useful for estimating demand," Lambert wrote.

By now, Tesla is an established company with a good reputation as opposed to three years ago when the Model S was just about to come out. That car has since won numerous accolades, including Car & Driver's "Car of the Century" award and even the best resale value among zero-emission vehicles. For EV Obsession, these explain the disparity between the Tesla Model X SUV and Model S reservations.

These reservations were made despite the fact that Tesla has yet to reveal the final version of the Model X, an exact release date and even pricing, as Lambert noted.

Franchise Herald reported last month that the Model X is Tesla's effort at getting more women buyers. To this end, some of the SUV's features, towing capability; large interior space; all-wheel drive and falcon-wing doors, have been designed with that particular market in mind.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said last month that deliveries for their all-electric SUV are expected to begin in Q3 2015, according to The Street.

"We're expecting to begin our first deliveries in probably about three or four month, And as with the software, I'm looking at the latest iteration of the Model X every week, and it really is, it's turning out to be a really great car."

Apart from the Tesla Model X SUV, the American automaker also has the Model 3 lined up for release in the next few years.
